DIY Roof Replacement vs Hiring a Pro

For a full replacement, the trade consensus is clear: hire a professional.

The risk is real

Roofing is dangerous work. The CDC reports more than 150,000 ladder-related injuries a year in the US, many during roof work. Falls, heat and heavy materials make this a job for trained crews with the right safety gear.

Cost and quality

DIY saves on labor, which is roughly 40% to 60% of the cost, but mistakes are expensive. Improper installation causes leaks, voids manufacturer warranties, and shortens roof life. Most warranties also require certified installation.

When DIY can make sense

Small repairs on a low-slope, single-story roof, replacing a few shingles, or building a shed roof are reasonable DIY projects for a careful homeowner. A full house replacement is not. If in doubt, get a few quotes first using our free quote tool.
